Mayors for Healthy Kids

Working Together To Reduce Tobacco's Toll In America's Cities

What We're Doing

Mayors for Healthy Kids is a coalition of mayors from cities across the country who are coming together to protect kids from dangerous and often illegal tobacco products — including flavored vaping products and menthol cigarettes — that are far too easily available on store shelves in all of our cities.

It's time for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other agencies to crack down on manufacturers and retailers that are flaunting the law and continuing to sell illegal e-cigarette products that are addicting our kids.

We know Big Tobacco companies use menthol and mint flavors to hook kids, but most people don't realize there are still candy flavors like cotton candy and gummy bear on store shelves in cities across America.

Mayors for Healthy Kids' Resolution

Whereas tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., kills more than 480,000 Americans each year and is a major cause of lung cancer, heart disease and other major diseases;

Flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, appeal to and are a major cause of youth and young adult tobacco use. Eight out of ten youth who have ever used a tobacco product started with a flavored product;

Nearly 90% of youth e-cigarette users use flavored products; while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized the sale of only 23 tobacco-flavored e-cigarette products, illegal, unauthorized e-cigarettes remain for sale in a wide variety of kid-friendly flavors like cotton candy, gummy bear, mint, menthol and pink lemonade;

Half of youth who have ever tried smoking started with menthol cigarettes. The FDA has concluded that menthol cigarettes lead to increased smoking initiation among youth and young adults, greater addiction and decreased success in quitting smoking.

Flavored cigars, which are sold in hundreds of kid-friendly flavors, also attract kids and are especially popular among Black youth.

Now, therefore, as mayors of America's leading cities, we join as members of Mayors for Healthy Kids to reduce tobacco's toll on the residents of our cities and especially our youth.

By using our collective voice, we will advocate for policies to reduce tobacco's toll on our cities, including eliminating all flavored tobacco products.

Mayors Taking Action for Kids' Health

Learn About Youth E-cigarette Use

Youth e-cigarette use remains a serious public health problem in the United States. According to the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey, over 2.1 million middle and high school students currently use e-cigarettes. Nearly 90% of them report using flavored products.

Many of the e-cigarette products now on the market deliver massive doses of nicotine and can quickly addict kids. E-cigarettes can contain as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes or more. Nearly 40% of high school e-cigarette users vape daily or most days, a strong sign of addiction.

The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that youth use of nicotine in any form, including e-cigarettes, is unsafe. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug and can harm the developing brain of adolescents, especially the parts of the brain responsible for memory, attention and learning. We don't know yet what the long-term health impact of using e-cigarettes will be and our kids shouldn't be guinea pigs. The most important step we can take to protect our kids is to get rid of all flavored e-cigarettes.
